Roulette payouts and odds
A simple roulette payout chart with the true chance to win each bet, so you can see exactly what every chip pays and what it costs over time.
How to read a roulette payout
A roulette payout is written like 35 to 1. The first number is what you win. The second number is what you bet.
So a straight-up bet on one number pays 35 to 1. If you bet one chip and win, you get those winnings plus your original chip back.
- Winnings – the chips the dealer pays you.
- Your stake – the chip you placed, which stays yours when you win.
- When you lose – the dealer takes your chip, and nothing else.
You can use any chart as a simple roulette payout calculator: multiply your chips by the first number of the payout, then add back the chips you placed.
"To" and "for" are not the same. A payout written "to 1" means you also keep your bet.

Chance to win versus payout
The payout tells you how much you win. The odds tell you how often you win. These two are close, but never equal.
- European wheel: 37 pockets. Chance to hit one number – 2.70%.
- American wheel: 38 pockets. Chance to hit one number – 2.63%.
- Chance of red: 48.65% on European, 47.37% on American.
Every payout is set as if the green pockets did not exist. A number pays 35 to 1, but the zero adds an extra losing pocket. That small gap is the casino's profit.
Big payouts come from rare wins. A higher payout never means a better deal – it just means you win less often.
Why every bet has the same house edge
On one wheel, almost every bet costs the same over time. The payout shrinks exactly as the chance to win grows.
- European wheel – house edge of 2.70% (1/37) on every bet under standard rules.
- American wheel – house edge of 5.26% (1/19) on every bet but one.
That one is the five-number bet on the American wheel, also called the top line. It covers both zeros plus the first three numbers. It pays 6 to 1, which is less than fair for five numbers, so its edge jumps to 7.89%. It is the worst bet on the table.
No betting system changes this. Mixing bets, doubling up or chasing numbers all keep the same edge. Try it yourself in the system tester or read about the Martingale.
Picking red or picking the 17 costs the same on average. Choose the bet you find fun – the math does not care.
The green zero payout
The green pocket is a normal number for inside bets. A straight-up bet on 0 pays 35 to 1, just like any other number.
- European: chance to hit 0 – 2.70%.
- American: chance to hit 0 or 00 – 5.26% in total, 2.63% each.
- A split on 0 and 00 pays 17 to 1.
When green lands, all outside bets like red, odd or a dozen lose. On a French table, the La Partage rule returns half of an even-money bet, which lowers the edge on those bets to 1.35%.
Roulette odds on each wheel
The payouts stay the same. The extra green pockets are what make one wheel cost more than another.
| Wheel | Pockets | Edge on red/black | Edge on one number |
|---|---|---|---|
| European (single zero) | 37 | 2.70% | 2.70% |
| French (La Partage) | 37 | 1.35% | 2.70% |
| French (En Prison) | 37 | 1.39% | 2.70% |
| American (0 and 00) | 38 | 5.26% | 5.26% |
| American, Atlantic City rule | 38 | 2.63% | 5.26% |
| Triple zero (0, 00, 000) | 39 | 7.69% | 7.69% |
- European – one zero, house edge 2.70%.
- American – two zeros, house edge 5.26%, about 1.95 times the cost of European.
- Triple zero – three zeros, house edge 7.69%.

On every wheel, the more you play, the more your loss as a share of your total bets tends to get closer to the house edge. The simulator lets you watch this happen with free chips – no money involved.
If you want your free chips to last longer, pick the wheel with the fewest green pockets.
Questions
What are the odds in roulette?
It depends on the wheel. The chance to hit one number is 2.70% on a European wheel and 2.63% on an American wheel, while red or black hits 48.65% and 47.37% of the time.
What does a 35 to 1 payout mean?
You win that many chips for each chip you bet on a single number, and you also get your original chip back.
What is the roulette green payout?
A straight-up bet on 0 or 00 pays 35 to 1, the same as any other single number. Outside bets like red or odd lose when green lands.
Which roulette bet has the best odds?
Under standard rules, almost every bet on one wheel has the same house edge: 2.70% on European and 5.26% on American. On a French table with La Partage (or En Prison), even-money bets drop to about 1.35% (1.39% with En Prison), which makes them the best-value bets. The worst choice is the American five-number bet at 7.89%.
Can any bet or system get rid of the house edge?
No. Every payout is a little lower than the true odds, so the casino keeps its edge over time, no matter which bet or system you use.
