Slot volatility explained

Volatility tells you how much slot results swing from spin to spin – not how much the game pays back.

Exact numbers from every possible reel stop. These are our own teaching slots; real casino slots set their own numbers.

Brass Bells (low volatility) pays something about 1 in 3.1 spins, and its biggest win is 267 bets. Midnight Sequins (high volatility) pays about 1 in 4.4 spins, but most of those wins are small, and the rare big ones go up to 1266 bets.

Standard deviation (how far one spin usually lands from the average, in bets) is 2.96 for Brass Bells and 7.83 for Midnight Sequins. Their RTP is almost the same: 96.15% and 95.98%.

Brass Bells: five sample sessions

+65-59
Brass Bells: five real sessions of 200 spins, result in bets. Same RTP, very different rides.

Same bet, same number of spins, five tries. Look at the small, frequent steps up and down and how close the five endings sit.

Midnight Sequins: five sample sessions

+101-73
Midnight Sequins: five real sessions of 200 spins, result in bets. Same RTP, very different rides.

Same bet, same number of spins. Here the balance tends to slide down for long stretches, and one rare big hit can make a single session look very different from the others.

What slot volatility means for your bankroll

  • Average cost is about the same: Brass Bells has a house edge of 3.85%; Midnight Sequins has a house edge of 4.02%.
  • Low volatility: your balance usually drops slowly, so the same money tends to last more spins.
  • High volatility: long runs without a real win are normal, so the money can run out faster.
  • Either way: the house edge wins over time; volatility only changes the shape of the swings.

Pick a session budget first, then choose volatility by how big a swing you are fine with.

Is there a list of low volatility slot machines?

Real casino slots have their own RTP, hit frequency and volatility, set by the game maker and the casino. Some show a volatility label in the game info screen; many do not, and the label alone gives no exact number.

Questions

What does low volatility mean in slots?

It means the slot pays small wins often and big wins rarely, so your balance moves in small steps. On our Brass Bells, a win comes about 1 in 3.1 spins.

Are high volatility slot machines better than low volatility ones?

No. With the same RTP, both cost the same on average; high volatility only makes results swing more. On Midnight Sequins the biggest win is 1266 bets, but it is rare and the house edge still wins over time.

Is volatility the same as RTP?

No. RTP is the share of total bets a slot pays back over a very long time, while volatility describes how much single sessions swing around that average. Brass Bells and Midnight Sequins have almost the same RTP but standard deviations of 2.96 and 7.83.

How can I tell a slot's volatility?

Check the game info or help screen; some slots show a low, medium or high label. Real casino slots have their own numbers set by the game maker and the casino, and many do not publish them.
